Seatalk? NMEA? Your instruments, chart plotter and GPS. How do they talk?

After purchasing a new Orca 2 and Orca Display 2 navigation system I realized that it uses a modern navigation network protocol (NMEA 2000) and my relatively ancient RayMarine system (2008) uses SeaTalk 1.

Connecting the two together proved a challenge!  As a result I have had to dig into the whys and wherefores of marine networks.  It is not that difficult but from a zero start it did prove a challenge.

Let me explain to you so that when that fateful time comes when something needs replacing you can waltz in knowing how to go about it.
